Whiz Kids of the Week: Read to Succeed Participants

Horace Mann Insurance donated four bikes to, which were awarded last Friday to a kindergarten student, a first grader, a second grader, and a third grader who excelled in Read to Succeed, a recent reading incentive program.  

Winners were Hailey W. in Katrina Hanewich’s kindergarten class, Stefanie D. in Nancy Grant’s first grade class, Jared C. in Judy Jensen-LaConte’s second grade class and Cassandra S. in Theresa Gallagher’s third grade class.

Read to Succeed was a reading incentive program to inspire kids to engage in recreational reading. It was created by Six Flags Amusement Parks who offered admission tickets to children who read recreationally at home for more than six hours.

The program ran in L. G. Nourse Jan. 10 to March 1. Children were asked to read each night, record the amount of time they read, respond to weekly story questions and return their signed reading logs.

“Many students read more than six hours and they will receive an admission ticket to Six Flags in Springfield to use in the summer,” said Rachel Young, reading specialist and event coordinator. She also congratulated all readers.

Participating students were also awarded with the bike raffle entry, a McDonald’s ice cream coupon and a certificate. Many students reading above and beyond six hours and completing weekly story responses were also awarded a book, “Flat Stanley’s Worldwide Safari: The African Adventure.”

“Rachel does a really nice job organizing the reading incentive each year,” principal Danielle Klingaman said.
