5 Things You Need to Know Today, July 20

Here's what you need to know to get your weekend started.

Today is Friday, July 20. Here are five things to know today in Peabody.

  1. The state tournament for the 10-year-old Little League all-stars got underway last night in West Roxbury. Each of the four teams plays three games. Peabody West played Parkway National last night. The Tanner City boys play Holden tonight (7 p.m.) and then play a third game Saturday against LakeVille (4 p.m.). The championship game will be played Sunday (4 p.m.) between the top two teams.
  2. Likewise, the state tournament starts tonight for Peabody Babe Ruth 15-year-old all-stars as well, who captured the District 1 crown and now face Saugus first tonight (5:30) in World Series Park. The other teams include Winchester, Newton, Braintree, Walpole, Taunton and Plymouth. Pool play will continue over the next several days and the winner advances to a regional tournament. After Saugus, Peabody takes on Winchester Saturday (11:45 a.m.) and Newton on Sunday (9 a.m.). The championship game will be played July 28 at 1 p.m.
  3. The 11-year-old Little League all-stars from Peabody West play again tonight (7) at Stagefort Park in Gloucester to stay alive in the sectionals. They initially lost, 6-3, to Wakefield American on Wednesday.
  4.  will be held Saturday at the  from 7-11 p.m. The fundraiser is to help purchase a handicapped equipped van for a young quadriplegic Peabody girl.
  5. The Safety "80s Band" takes the stage at the Sunday evening (6-8 p.m.) for the second installment of the city's summer concert series.

And here's a sixth thing to keep in mind: Saturday, of course, is from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
