Spring playoffs, fundraiser run, McCarthy scholarships and more.

Today is Thursday, May 31. Here are five things to know today in Peabody.

  1. Today's weather: Sunny with a high near 74 degrees.
  2. Run for Ricey Saturday: Online registration ends today for the at the this Saturday. The 5K and fun run/walk will benefit the family of fallen Firefighter James Rice via the James Rice Memorial Fund. You can also register the day of, starting at 7:30 a.m. Race organizer Lisa O'Connell says there are more than 70 raffle prizes to win, so make sure to bring some extra money with you on Saturday to buy tickets. Anyone who still wants to contribute to the cause, but isn't up for running or walking on Saturday, can still just purchase raffle tickets, O'Connell says.
  3. McCarthy Scholars: The PTO is accepting applications until June 1 for two $500 scholarships for students who graduated from the McCarthy. The PTO will also invite the winners to attend the fifth grade moving on ceremony on June 11. Applicants are asked to write a paragraph about their memorable experience at the McCarthy.   4. Team tennis in the tourney: The MIAA announced team tennis brackets yesterday and the girls' tennis club is seeded 11th with a 9-8 record in the Division I North tournament. The Lady Tanners visit No. 6 Andover (14-5) on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) for a first round match. Meanwhile, the Fenwick girls likewise are in the Division III North tournament and host North Reading on Friday (3:30 p.m.) The Lady Crusaders are seeded 7th on a 10-6 record to the Hornets 10th (8-8).
  5. In other playoffs news: The Tanners' softball club goes to bat in Andover today (3 p.m.) in the first round of Division I North play and baseball is coming up Saturday (4 p.m.) at home for the boys. The girls' lacrosse team was booted from the postseason last night by North Andover in a 17-7 defeat in the first round. And over at , girls' lacrosse for Division II North while baseball travels to Newburyport (3 p.m.) for a first round contest in Division III North.
