Today is Friday, Sept. 14. Here are five things to know today in Peabody.

  1. Emergency weather ban: The City Council adopted a new emergency weather ban last night that will serve to replace the . The new ordinance is still in draft form and will be refined in the weeks ahead before the final version is formally voted in. Stay tuned for more details on this story.
  2. Global Fight League comes to Peabody: is hosting a Mixed Martial Arts contest Saturday night featuring two local contestants. More to come on that story this morning.
  3. The Friends of the Welch School Playground will be down at the site for the new playspace with some help from a dozen Endicott College students.
  4. Peabody firefighter John Soares -- $2,400 in donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
  5. Tierney to host Academy Night 2012: Congressman John Tierney, holding his annual Academy Night, invites students to meet with service academy representatives Sept. 19 (7 p.m.) at the main campus of North Shore Community College in Danvers. Any student who has an interest in learning more about the admissions process for one of the nation's service academies is welcome. Students who wish to apply to the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy must send a completed application packet to Tierney's Peabody district office by Nov. 1.
