Alums Help Fund New Civics Class At Peabody High School
Two members of the class of 1950 donated $1,243 for the new class.

PEABODY, MA -- Students in Democracy in Action, a new civics-based course at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, got some aid for planned field trips, including a week in Washington, D.C. Polly Southwick and Ann Flynn, both of Peabody and both Peabody High School graduates from the Class of 1950, donated $1,243 to help defray some of the costs of the trips.
The two women said they were motivated by memories of their own civics teachers while attending the school. They made the donation after reading about a similar donation from members of the Class of 1946.
There are 20 seniors enrolled in the class. The D.C. experience, coordinated by the Close Up Foundation, will provide these Peabody Veterans Memorial High School seniors an opportunity to engage with students from across the United States in civics-based workshops and simulations, tour the nation’s capital, and meet with with their congressional delegation.
