PEABODY, MA — The Peabody Fire Department is crediting a 5-year-old girl's calmness and fast action for changing "an outcome that could have been a lot worse" after she called 9-1-1 to report that her mother had fallen in their home.
Peabody first said Engine 4, Peabody police and Atlantic Ambulance responded to the call that came in on the mother's cell phone after she had fainted in her bedroom.
Peabody fire posted a WFXT-TV report on 5-year-old Addison Huntley's quick call and praised her reaction in what could have been a very scary situation, "all because her parents have taught her what to do."
"Children are resilient and much smarter than we sometimes give them credit for," Peabody fire said.
The station interviewed the child and the mother, Mackenzie, who was treated for soreness from her fall and then released.
Peabody Fire Lt. John LeClerc was among the first responders who arrived at the home and found Addison and her 2-year-old sister, Victoria, and had them use their toy doctor's kits to "assist" crews helping attend to their mother.
"While no one necessarily plans for an event like this, it is never too early to prepare," Peabody fire said. "Great job by all involved.
"We are happy the outcome was a good one."
