Peabody Implements Water Restrictions Amid Spring Drought

The Phase II restrictions include restrictions on lawn watering and car washing.

"With precipitation well below what we typically see this time of year, these restrictions are necessary to maintain a safe and reliable water supply for all residents and to preserve critical capacity for fire protection." - Peabody Mayor Ted Bettencourt (Ashley Ludwig/Patch)

PEABODY, MA — Peabody residents will face restrictions, effective immediately, when it comes to watering their lawns and washing their cars amid a spring drought across the North Shore.

The city said on Wednesday it was implementing "Phase II" water restrictions because of "increasingly strained regional water conditions and significant declines in seasonal precipitation."

The city said the lack of rain has contributed to low flows in the Ipswich River and reservoir, placing pressure on the city's water supply, endangering the drinking water supply, and the water available for fire emergencies.

"With precipitation well below what we typically see this time of year, these restrictions are necessary to maintain a safe and reliable water supply for all residents and to preserve critical capacity for fire protection," Peabody Mayor Ted Bettencourt said. "We appreciate the cooperation of Peabody residents as we take responsible steps to safeguard our water resources."

The following are the water restrictions now in effect:

PHASE II – MANDATORY WATER RESTRICTION GUIDELINES

Lawn Watering via Sprinklers (In-Ground or Above-Ground):

Odd-Numbered Addresses:
• Monday, Wednesday, Friday - 6:00 AM–9:00 AM and 6:00 PM–9:00 PM

Even-Numbered Addresses:
• Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday - 6:00 AM–9:00 AM and 6:00 PM–9:00 PM

Additional Regulations:
Hand watering by pail or watering can is allowed at any time
Hoses may only be used during scheduled watering times
Car washing is permitted only during scheduled watering times
No Sunday watering of any kind is allowed

City officials said they will continue to monitor precipitation, reservoir conditions, and river flow levels as the season progresses and will adjust restrictions as necessary.
