PEABODY, MA — The state Department of Transportation will begin the installation of wrong-way driver countermeasures on Route 128 this week following a series of crashes, close calls and the tragic death of State Trooper Keith Trainor, of Salem, this spring.
Drivers on Route 128 between Peabody and Gloucester should expect daytime construction operations starting Tuesday. The work is planned on Route 128 northbound and southbound and will continue until further notice, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to MassDOT.
The work will require temporary shoulder closures so crews can install new signage safely and effectively.
The work is part of wrong-way driving countermeasure improvements being implemented at ramps along Route 128 following what MassDOT described as a comprehensive corridor assessment after the North Shore was the center of a rash of crashes and close calls involving highway wrong-way drivers in recent months.
