The reigning Mayor of Danvers is actually from Peabody, although it's only an honorary title and he certainly has poured a lot of himself and his business into Onion Town.
Kyriakos "Kary" Andrinopoulos again emerged the winner by popular vote in the Danvers Rotary Club's fundraiser. Andrinopoulos, who is the co-owner of New Brothers Restaurant & Deli in Danvers Square, raised $3,500 this year in the contest.
He and his brother-in-law, and their wives, also all received Drum Major for Justice awards from the Danvers Committee on Diversity earlier this year in recognition of a commitment to social justice and leadership role in the community on advancing tolerance.
Rotary President Barry Kaplan announced the mayoral winner Thursday night during the Danvers Rotary Concert, which was held in the Danvers High auditorium due to the foul weather in the forecast. Both Kaplan and Town Manager Wayne Marquis presented awards to runners up Larry DeLorenzo and Gayla Bartlett.
Due to a conflict, Andrinopoulos wasn't actually present to receive his award this year. The standing joke is that Marquis now has to take his marching orders from the Honorary Mayor -- not quite. The honorary mayor just gets to preside at various Rotary functions.
The final tally of votes was not released Thursday, although by late Wednesday afternoon, Andrinopoulos had doubled his lead on DeLorenzo, who is the restaurant manager at the Danversport Yacht Club, and Bartlett was in third. She is the manager at Cranney Self Storage.
Kaplan said the Rotary will present a total of $12,000 in scholarship awards to high school seniors in July. This year's honorary mayor contest raised about $7,500 for that purpose -- each vote cost a $5 donation to the Rotary.
In addition to Andrinopoulos' $3,500, DeLorenzo raised $1,800 and Bartlett raised $1,200.
The contest is part of the Danvers Family Festival.
