COVENANT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BASKETBALL TEAMS WIN FOUR CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES ON SAME DAY

All four basketball teams at Covenant Christian Academy (Peabody) brought home victory in their league championship games this week.

WEST PEABODY, MA – Four teams. Four Championships. In an extraordinary and statistically unlikely turn of events, both the Girls and Boys Middle School Basketball teams, and the Girls and Boys Varsity High School Basketball teams each brought home their respective league championship titles on Thursday, February 11, 2016. Four new championship trophy’s now grace the top shelf in the schools entry hallway. “I am so thrilled for all of these student athletes. They work diligently everyday, both in the classroom and on the court. These kids have passion for the game and play with a great deal of integrity and heart. I couldn’t ask for more, “ said Kathy Azadian, Athletic Director at Covenant Christian Academy.

The Girls Varsity Basketball Team defeated Boston Trinity Academy for the GIL (Girls Independent League) Division 2 Championship with a final score of CCA 44, BTA 32. The Girls Varsity Team came into this final game of the season with a record of 16-0. In what was supposed to be a re-building and growing year, this young, and not particularly tall, team used speed and agility to their benefit all season. “We focused on conditioning early on in the season, and that has made a world of difference,” said Coach Ryan Plosker. Captain Favor Ezewuzie (Malden), the lone senior on the team, scored 27 points to cap off an already remarkable performance this season. Favor’s ppg average now stands at 19.3, which according to weekly statistics reported in the Salem News, establishes her as the leading female scorer on the North Shore. Freshman Logan Plosker (Wenham) contributed 10 points and Jordan Ann Sperounis (Amesbury) added 7 to the final score as well. This team, which refers to itself as a “Family” ends a remarkable season undefeated at 17-0.

The Boys Varsity Basketball Team defeated Gann Academy for the MBIL (Massachusetts Bay Independent League) Division 1 Championship, with a final score of CCA 57, Gann 56. In what can only be described as an epic nail-bitter, this game came down to the final 10 seconds and was won on an incredible arching 3-pointer by Sophomore Jonathan Jordan (Wakefield). Gann immediately got off 2 additional shots, but missed both, and CCA held on defensively for the win. The Boys Team won the MBIL Division 2 Championship last year, and this was their first season playing in the MBIL Division 1. The Boys completed their season with a record of 15-2.
