Google Honors Peabody's Namesake
Watch a video explaining why George Peabody is being featured on the search engine's main page today.
PEABODY, MA -- Peabody residents who head to Google's main page Friday are likely to recognize a familiar face. George Peabody, the city's namesake, is being featured in today's Google Doodle for his role as the father of philanthropy.
"Today we celebrate George Peabody, a father of modern philanthropy and the namesake of the prestigious Peabody Award.," the company said. The video above shows students at the George Peabody Elementary School in San Francisco working on the mural Google selected to honor Peabody.
Peabody was originally known as the Northfields, "the Farms" and Brooksby in the more than two centuries after it was settled in 1626 as a part of Salem. It was named after George Peabody on April 30, 1868 and eventually incorporated as a city in 1916.
