'Hatred Has No Place In Peabody': Mayor Denounces Antisemitic Middle School Incidents
Peabody Mayor Ted Bettencourt issued a statement against antisemitism after hateful incidents targeting Jews at Higgins Middle School.
PEABODY, MA — Peabody Mayor Ted Bettencourt issued a statement on Monday declaring that "hatred has no place in Peabody" after a series of antisemitic incidents in the city's schools.
Peabody Superintendent Josh Vadala last week cited an increase in antisemitic hate speech at the Higgins Middle School and ordered grade-by-grade assemblies for students to attend with the help of the Lappin Foundation.
Vadala told the School Committee that the incidents included both hate speech and the display of hateful symbols against Jews — including reports of a swastika found at the Higgins School field — as well as homophobic slurs.

"The recent incidents targeting our Jewish neighbors are unacceptable and stand in direct opposition to the values of respect, acceptance, and inclusion that define Peabody as a welcoming and diverse city," Bettencourt's office said in Monday's statement. "Every member of our community deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
"Acts of antisemitism and displays of hatred will not be tolerated."
He said officials and law enforcement are investigating all reports of hate speech and "remain committed to ensuring accountability for those responsible."
"The city of Peabody acknowledges the many contributions of our Jewish community and affirms that all Jewish residents have the right to live, work, attend school, practice their faith, and move through daily life safely and without fear," Bettencourt said. "We call on the entire Peabody community to stand together against hatred. Reject prejudice. Choose kindness. Help foster a community built on respect, understanding, and inclusion.
"Hatred has no place in Peabody."
