Local Church Celebrates 100 Years

A century of influence in Peabody and around the world

[PEABODY, MA, June 1, 2018—] Next month, Calvary Baptist Church (CBC) of Peabody will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding. Current and former members of the church will be coming to Peabody from all over the country and world to participate in various events as part of a “homecoming” weekend to connect with one another and mark the occasion.

In today’s age of internet fads and fleeting trends, where something goes viral one day and is forgotten the next, one hundred years seems almost implausible. As such, this small, local church is extremely proud and enthusiastic about celebrating its Centennial.

Located in downtown Peabody behind City Hall, CBC was founded in 1918 by a small group of Slavic immigrants. Although CBC has faced many challenges over the years, they are grateful to God for the countless ways he has sustained them, and they feel privileged to continue preaching and living out the gospel for many more years to come. Today, it is a mid-size church that is very active in the community—providing weekly dinners to those in need and annually hosting the well-attended Trunk or Treat in the fall and an Easter Egg Hunt in the spring.

CBC is made up of many young families, working professionals, college and seminary students, and local community members that have been coming for many generations. Calvary is becoming increasingly more diverse, but is still proud of its Slavic roots. Many members are of Slavic heritage, and Russian shouts of “Christ is Risen!” can be heard every Easter morning. CBC also shares its building with the Slavic Evangelical Baptist Church and a Brazilian church, Sera Nossa Terra--members of all three have been invited to the celebration.

For the Centennial weekend, which will take place July 20-22, invitations have been sent out to current and former members throughout the country and globe (as far away as Tanzania and Japan). Guests will be able to participate in a wide range of activities that weekend, including a banquet, worship night, river cruise, tree-planting ceremony, a combined Sunday service, and a family festival. The event celebrates every person who has ever been part of the CBC family. It is a church with vast and deep roots and a thriving tree with branches that have spread across the country and world.
