Obituary: Charles "Ragsy" Mavroules, Co-Proprietor of Steve's Lounge in Peabody for 20 Years

WWII Veteran

Charles “Ragsy” Mavroules, 87, of Peabody, died Saturday, November 15,2014 at the Lahey Clinic , Burlington after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Joan M,. “Meme” (Pelletier) Mavroules. Charles was born in Peabody, MA on August 16, 1927, the son of the late James and Stella (Zoumbaneas) Mavroules and had resided in Peabody all his life.

He was a co-proprietor of Steve’s Lounge in Peabody for 20 years before his retirement in 1989. He had previously worked in the Leather Industry in Peabody and later was a truck driver for Essex Bituminous Corp. in Peabody.

Charles and his wife enjoyed traveling, taking many trips to Jamaica and Greece. He was very proud of his Greek heritage and was a member of St. Vasilios Men’s Club. He enjoyed cooking, was an avid reader, and enjoyed his daily newspaper and the National Geographic. He was a veteran of WWII serving with the US Navy. He enjoyed watching Boston Sports teams, especially the Patriots and the Red Sox.

He is survived by his children, Rebecca M. (Mavroules) Jones and her husband Byron of Kingston, NH, Pamela M. Mavroules and Mitchell C. Mavroules both of Peabody, a sister, Penelope “Penny” Scangas , and his brother, Alex Mavroules, both of Peabody, his sisters-in-law, Alberta Mavroules and Mary Mavroules both of Peabody and Dorothy Mavroules of Danvers, and brother-in-law Norman Pelletier. He’s also survived by his grandchildren, Christopher Hagen, Jason and Jill Re, Melissa Re, Nicole (Mavroules) Ryan and her husband Michael Ryan, Alycia Hagen, Timothy Mavroules, James Page, Stephen Mavroules, his seven great grandchildren Julianna, Gracie, Nickolas, Tanjelah, Wyatt, Quentin and Kaelyn, his god children, Nicole Cennami and Sophia (Mavroules) Henry, and several nieces and nephews. He was the former husband of Margaret (Graves) Mavroules and the brother of the late Congressman Nicholas Mavroules, Michael Mavroules, George Mavroules and brother-in-law James Scangas.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. His funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed by Services in St. Vasilios Church, Peabody at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery; Peabody.
