Obituary: John F. Vargas Jr. of Peabody, Owned the Somewhere Lounge

John F. Vargas Jr., 85, died Sept. 21

John F. Vargas Jr., 85, of Peabody and formerly of Cambridge, died Sunday morning at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of the late Eleanor (Buono) Vargas. They traveled the world together.

Born in Cambridge, he was the son of the late John F. Vargas Sr. and Angelina (Pacheco) Vargas. He had resided in Peabody for 35 years before moving to Salem, NH a year ago.

John owned and operated several companies in Cambridge, Peabody, and Lynn, including Bell Taxi, The Empire Room in Cambridge, Somewhere Lounge in Peabody, and the 757 Lounge in Lynn. He managed Jimmy’s Coffee House on Walnut Street in Peabody for over 30 years. He loved to play cards, follow the sports scores, and check the daily number. After his retirement, he enjoyed wintering in Cocoa Beach Florida.

John is survived by his sons, John F. Vargas III and his wife Jennifer of Salem, NH, Nicholas and his wife Tyra of Fremont, NH, Ronald Vargas of San Francisco, CA, David Vargas of Bensalem, PA, his daughter, Michele and her husband Alan Perlman of Bentonville, AR and is also survived by his loving nieces, nephews and by his six grandchildren.

His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 1:30 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn Street, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11:30 AM until 1:30 PM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Haven from Hunger, 71 Wallis St., Peabody, MA 01960.
