Longtime Peabody Firefighter Killed In Beverly Crash

Daniel Pimenta stayed on as a firefighter after his MS diagnosis, and worked diligently to raise money for MS research and services.

BEVERLY, MA — A Peabody firefighter died Sunday when he was struck while riding his bike in Beverly, the Peabody Firefighters Local 925 announced on Facebook late Sunday night. The Peabody Fire Department confirmed Daniel Pimenta's passing in a statement on Monday.

The statement said Pimenta was 53 years old, and had worked with the Peabody Fire Department for 27 years. Pimenta helped raise thousands of dollars for the National MS Society in June's Bike MS race as part of the Peabody Fire Honor Guard team, according to the team website.

"Dan was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 25 years ago, but never stopped firefighting and worked diligently to raise awareness for the disease," said the statement, which also asked for space for the department and Pimenta's family to allow them to grieve.

Beverly Police said authorities responded to a report of a crash around 4:30 p.m. on Hale Street, and found Pimenta with life threatening injuries. Pimenta was transported to Beverly Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police learned that a 69-year-old Beverly man was driving northbound in a Jeep when the accident happened, but no charges are pending.

Pimenta was an "avid rider and champion supporter for the MS society," the Facebook post said. "He rode every chance he got and he fought hard to raise awareness and support for this cause." Pimenta is survived by his wife and two children. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
