Peabody Man Stole Pills, Credit Cards from Elderly Women: Attorney General

Peabody, MA - A Peabody man has been indicted in connection with allegedly using his position as a TV service sales representative to steal credit cards, cash, jewelry and prescription pain medication from elderly women in Dorchester and Revere, according to Attorney General Maura Healey.

Scott Hutchins, age 31, of Peabody, was indicted by a Statewide Grand Jury on charges of Larceny Under $250 (one count), Larceny Over $250 from Person over 60 (two counts), Larceny Under $250 from Person Over 60 (two counts), Receiving Stolen Property Under $250 (one count) and Receiving Stolen Property Over $250 (one count).

He will be arraigned at a later date in Suffolk Superior Court.

“We allege that this defendant used his position as a TV service salesperson in order to gain the trust of elderly women and steal from their homes,” said AG Healey. “Our office is committed to going after those who take advantage of others and violate their trust.”

State Police assigned to the Gaming Enforcement Unit arrested Hutchins on Oct. 8, 2015 at the Plainridge Park Casino. During Hutchins’ arrest, State Police discovered a credit card with a name, later determined to belong to a 92-year-old victim, in the front seat of his car. Hutchins was allegedly wearing a T-shirt with the name of a TV service provider on it and told authorities he was given the credit card for his services.

Authorities found a worksheet in Hutchins’ backpack with notes containing personal information including names, dates of birth, addresses, social security numbers and phone numbers including the name on the credit card.

Authorities determined through their investigation that in October 2015, Hutchins allegedly went to the Dorchester home of a 92-year-old woman and told her he worked for a TV cable service provider and could lower her cable bill. The woman allegedly let Hutchins into her home when she was alone on two occasions and Hutchins allegedly stole her credit card.

In June 2015, Hutchins allegedly went to the home of a 67-year-old Revere woman claiming to work for a TV cable service provider. Hutchins allegedly told the woman that he could get her a discount on her monthly cable bill by updating her subscription. The woman let Hutchins into her home and allowed him to use her restroom. Hutchins allegedly stole a $100 bill out of the woman’s wallet. He returned to the woman’s home later that week with two men he identified as his co-workers and allegedly stole all of the woman’s jewelry from her jewelry box while he was supposedly working on her cable box.

Authorities determined that Hutchins allegedly pawned $900 worth of jewelry at an Everett pawn shop on the same day he left the home of the Revere victim. The victim was able to later identify the jewelry that Hutchins allegedly pawned.

According to authorities, Hutchins also allegedly used his position as a TV service representative to gain entry into the home of a 57-year-old Dorchester woman in September. Hutchins allegedly stole the woman’s prescription Vicodin bottles as well her credit card. The woman’s 87-year-old mother was also at the Dorchester home at the time of the alleged robbery and Hutchins allegedly stole jewelry belonging to her.
