Peabody Names Joe Daly Fire Chief

Daly replaces Steve Pasdon, who retired this spring after 18 years as Chief.

From The City of Peabody: Mayor Edward A. Bettencourt, Jr. is pleased to announce the appointment of Joseph L. Daly as the City of Peabody’s new Fire Chief. Daly succeeds Steve Pasdon who announced his retirement this Spring after serving 18 years as Chief.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force Reserve who served as a Fire Protection Specialist during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, Daly earned his Firefighter certification at the Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois and attained the rank of Sergeant prior to his honorable discharge from the service. A graduate of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, Daly started his career as a Peabody firefighter in 1991 and rose steadily through the ranks. He was appointed Lieutenant in 1996, Captain in 2000, and Deputy Fire Chief in 2010. As a candidate for Fire Chief, Daly participated in an assessment center which gauged his readiness for various aspects of the job. “Joe Daly brings nearly 30 years of experience as a member of the Peabody Fire Department to the job of Chief,” said Mayor Bettencourt. “He has demonstrated extraordinary leadership capabilities during his nine years as Deputy Chief and a remarkable insight into the inner workings of the Department.”

Daly will assume the title of Interim Fire Chief on July 1st. Mayor Bettencourt will submit his appointment to the City Council on July 11th after which a formal swearing in ceremony will be scheduled. “I am looking forward to the challenges of being the next Fire Chief,” said Daly. “I am humbled and honored, but this is not about me. It is about the men and women of the Peabody Fire Department and the citizens of the City that we are sworn to protect.”
