Peabody Nats Fall to Swampscott in Jimmy Fund Tourney Play

Swampscott scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to upend Peabody National, 7-6, Saturday afternoon.

The Swampscott 12-year-old Jimmy Fund baseball team picked up its first win Saturday, a walk-off 7-6 victory over Peabody National.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Thomas Pass hit a high, deep fly ball to left field that fell in, allowing the tying and winning runs to come across the plate.

Andrew Dove doubled with one out in the bottom of the sixth, Josh Rubin reached on a fielder’s choice, and both came home on Pass’ blast.

Peabody National’s second pitcher of the afternoon, Zachary Fucci took the loss. Fucci came on for starter Dylan DeFillippo in the bottom of the third.

Spencer Perkins picked up the win on the mound for Swampscott, relieving starter Peter Battinelli to start the fourth inning.

“That’s a very good team over there, Swampscott, they have a lot of good players, it was a good game and we enjoyed playing them,” Peabody National manager Eric Letson said. “We would have liked a different result, but the kids played well, and we’ll try to get a win in our next game.”

Peabody National takes on East Lynn Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Swampscott squares off against Salem at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

“It’s great to get a win,” Swampscott manager Tom Pass said. “It was an exciting way to end a ballgame, down a run with two outs in our last at bat, that’s for sure.”

Dove let the Swampscott attack with two hits. Benjamin Cohen and William Toth had two hits apiece for Peabody National.

Swampscott opened up with a while Peabody National knocked off Lynnfield 8-6 to start up the annual summer Jimmy Fund Tournament.

Peabody is the host city for this year’s tournament; all games will be played at Lt. Ross Field.

Peabody National manager Eric Letson is joined on the bench by coaches Anthony Farese, Wayne DeStefano, Mike DeMayo and John Gagnon.

Steve Allen and Jeff Rubin are Swampscott manager Tom Pass’ assistants for the 2011 Jimmy Fund 12-year-old baseball tournament.
