Peabody Well Represented at Hockey Night in Boston

Colin McGillivary and Jared Hynes starred for all-star teams this past week in the Hockey Night in Boston Boys Major Summer Showcase.

As the Hockey Night in Boston Major Showcase winded down, the city of Peabody was well represented.

The Minter brothers shared the ice together for TeamOne New England, which went on to snag the championship crown for the tournament on Friday.

The defending champion, Greater Boston, also sported a Peabody player. Junior Colin McGillivary, a tall, strong defenseman from state champion Malden Catholic, has been on the top defensive pair for Greater Boston. McGillivary was able to play with several of his Malden Catholic teammates as well as numerous other stars from eastern Massachusetts during the weeklong series.

“It’s pretty great,” McGillivary said of his HNIB experience. “I love it. It’s pretty fun.”

McGillivary and Greater Boston played their quarterfinal game Thursday night at the Haverhill Valley Forum, defeating South Shore/RI, 6-2, but then losing on Friday in the semi-finals to TeamOne New England, 8-4.

McGillivary scored six goals and added 16 assists during his sophomore season at Malden Catholic, and he hopes to improve upon that next season.

“I just want to get better and improve,” McGillivary said. “Hopefully I’ll get to win two more championships with MC.”

Also representing Peabody was St. John’s Prep goaltender Jared Hynes.

Hynes, who played for the Suburban squad, will be entering his final season at St. John’s in the fall. Hynes competed with players from all across eastern and central Massachusetts as well as players from around New England.

The Suburban squad fell Thursday morning to One Hockey White, 4-2.

For many of the players at the Major Showcase, including Hynes, the goal is to get noticed by one of the many prep school or juniors scouts constantly circulating throughout the arena.

“You get looked at by people you normally wouldn’t be looked at,” Hynes said. “You get to play against kids you wouldn’t normally get to play against.”
