Peabody West Powers Over Salem American

After 3-1/2 innings Peabody West held a 12-0 lead, causing the mercy rule to be invoked.

Peabody West put 12 runs on the scoreboard before the contest was finally called off on the mercy rule Wednesday night against Salem American.

“This time we jumped out real early,” said Peabody manager Ed Aiello. His team of all-stars belted out hit after hit, bolstered early on by two three-run homers – one from Matt Damato and the other a pinch hit homer by Mark Ginetti.

Bearing in mind it was now do or die position in the tournament, Aiello said, that was all the momentum his club needed to run with the rest of the game – all 3-1/2 innings that was played. The mercy rule was called in the top of the fourth.

“The Wyoma game was a great game,” Aiello said, adding that his club did get some chances to win, but couldn’t capitalize on those opportunities.

Next up in the District 16 Little League tournament are cross-town rivals the Peabody Nationals on Saturday at 10 a.m. The Nationals defeated Saugus, 9-3, Wednesday night.

Aiello said everyone is looking forward to that match-up. He said there used to be a citywide tournament during the season, but these days the Williamsport Tournament is the only time all three Peabody leagues cross paths.
