Peabody's Top Brass Break For Green Eggs And Ham

Top city officials have taken time out of their schedules this week to read to students the Welch School.

PEABODY, MA -- It's National Reading Month, and this week was also the time when school districts across the country participated in Read Across America Day. That means students at the Welch School in Peabody had some very special visitors. Peabody Mayor Ted Bettencourt, Interim Superintendent Herb Levine and Peabody Police Chief Thomas Griffin all took time out of their schedules to read to students at the school.

Bettencourt was seemingly so moved by the chance to read to students on Wednesday he wrote a poem commemorating the experience, which he posted on his Facebook page:

what fun we all had at the Welch School that fine day
what fun we had reading no tech in our way
we spent time together with a book in our hand
and we read them out loud, oh my it was grand!
we sat there that day and we read Dr. Seuss
we read and we laughed at ‘Thidwick the Moose’
the kids in the classroom the grownups in the hall
we read and we laughed and we all had a ball
Teachers like Houlden, Camelo and Bratt
read ‘Horton Hears a Who’ and 'The Cat in the Hat'
Mrs. Cobb and her friends made wonderful art
the Welch looked terrific they all did their part
Police Chief Griffin and Superintendent Levine
read about fish that were blue and eggs that were green
Welch teachers and staff and students all know
The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go

Maybe we're being snarky, but our vote is for Bettencourt to stick to being mayor.
