Visit Peabody’s GreenFest 2014 at the Brown School

Students at The Brown School have made excellent strides in demonstrating to the community that the environment is worth protecting.  Fourth and Fifth Graders involved the Brown School Student Club, the Environmental Eagles, have worked hard to eliminate waste on multiple levels, including making old-turned-new candles, and filling used baby food jars with homemade body scrubs, all to be sold to raise money for the school.  The Brown School student’s hard work has paid off; in 2012 Brown School was given the Recycle Bowl Award (in 2013 they won 2nd place), and the school has won an Excellence in Environmental Education Award from 2008 until 2013. 

On Saturday May 3rd the Brown School is once again opening its doors to the public as host of Peabody’s fourth annual GreenFest, a Peabody School District event.  From 9am until 1pm Peabody and surrounding communities are welcome to attend this fun, free, family event.  Sponsors of GreenFest include Salem State University, Peabody Municipal Light Plant, Gravoc Associates, Treadwell’s Ice Cream, and JRM Hauling.  This year’s theme is STEM Education for a Sustainable Future.  GreenFest will feature a robotics demonstration, and dozens of exhibits presented by green organizations and institutions within Massachusetts, including Independent Power Systems, a solar provider out of Beverly; Small Business Computing, a Green Computer Company; and the Salem State University Geology Department.  In addition, Peabody Public Schools will present an exhibit that will highlight the green and sustainable technology that will be implemented on the planned new LEED Silver certified Higgins Middle School, and the 2014 GreenPeabody scholarship winner will be announced.

Visitors young and old are encouraged to participate in numerous fun activities, including a Green Book Swap, Recycling Arts and Crafts, and the opportunity to view student science fair projects.  Visitors can recycle old items at the Bay State Textiles Recycling Rebate Program (for a list of acceptable items, visit baystatetextiles.com).  GreenFest will also feature electronics recycling and confidential large-scale paper shredding, provided for anyone who wants to eliminate their waste during spring cleaning season.  The Captain Samuel Brown School is located at 150 Lynn St. in Peabody.  For more information on GreenFest, visit the event webpage.
