9 Children Saved In Cape Cod Canal

A boat overloaded with passengers flipped in Buzzards Bay; a child was reportedly revived.

WAREHAM, MA — Nine children and three adults were saved in Buzzards Bay near Wareham Wednesday after their boat flipped over, officials said. One child was reportedly pulled from the water unconscious and revived. The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. in the Cape Cod Canal near Hog Island Channel.

A Good Samaritan aboard the boat "Disco Volante" rescued most of the boaters while Coast Guard and other rescue boats saved the rest. The Good Samaritan reported the 18-foot sail boat "appeared to be overloaded with passengers."

WHDH reported a 9-year-old boy was pulled from the water unconscious and was revived. Boating conditions Wednesday were relatively calm, with partly cloudy skies and a 5 mph breeze. The Good Samaritan reported the child was stuck under the overturned boat for a period of time.

"It is recommended that mariners verify the max amount of horsepower and capacity a vessel can handle before going underway," said Coast Guard Command Duty Officer Scott Bacholm in a statement.
