12th annual Jordan’s Polar Plunge to take place March 1 at Plymouth Beach

PLYMOUTH, MA, ISSUED FEBRUARY 3, 2014…Sure, the temperature outside may be cold, but believe it or not, it will be beach weather very soon.

At least, that’s what 600 hale and hearty “Plungers” are saying. The 12th Annual Jordan’s Polar Plunge is set to get underway Saturday, March 1 at Plymouth Beach.  The Plunge is set up for the JHC Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess-Plymouth (formerly the Jordan Hospital). Proceeds from the Plunge benefit the JHC Cancer Center.

Last year more than 600 Plungers donned costumes, collected pledges and then dashed into the Atlantic – and in the process raised over $130,000 for the Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital – Plymouth. This year’s organizers hope for an even higher turnout.

Since its inception 11 years ago, the JHC Polar Plunge has donated over $1,000,000 to the Cancer Center to help fund:

• The expansion of the JHC Cancer Center;
• The purchase of a state-of-the-art linear accelerator;
• The purchase of information technology software and training programs;
• The purchase of “smart” IV pumps for Chemotherapy
• The renovation of the Chemotherapy rooms

This year’s proceeds will help fund the Clinical Trial Research Program at the JHC Cancer Center.  Currently, these are Phase 3 trials, which provide current best practices, though the hope is at some point to participate in pharmaceutical trials.  Offering clinical trials through the Cancer Center has added a depth to the quality of care and allows the community to access trials locally. 

The event gets underway at 11:30 a.m. with registration. At 12:45 p.m. there is a safety briefing and 1:00 p.m.  the Plunge gets underway. At 1:30 p.m. there will be an awards ceremony and refreshments at Plymouth Yacht Club.
