Are Tolls Coming to Route 3?

A new proposal could see the creation of a toll lane on Route 3.

As the state tries to find a way to alleviate the heavy traffic on Route 3, a new proposal would see the use of tolls on the highway south of Boston.

Frank DePaola, chief operating officer for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, told WBZ that one lane would be constructed on both sides of the highway and tolled for its use. Another proposal would see the construction of two lanes that are reversible in direction depending on the flow of traffic.

The toll lane would reside on a 17-mile stretch of highway between the Braintree split and Exit 12 in Norwell according to WCVB. The tolls would be collected in a similar manner as the Tobin Bridge through pay-by-plate or with a transponder.
