The Bay Players Present Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike

Durang's comic play draws on Chekhov roots

The Bay Players community theatre organization presents Christopher Durang’s comic play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, on June 19, 20, 26 and 27, 8 pm, at First Parish Church, 842 Tremont Street (Rte. 3A), Duxbury. The production is directed by Philip Markella.

“Everyone has a monologue that is nothing short of hilarious…You’ve only spent a weekend with these people, but you might want to spend the rest of your life with (them).” - Huffington Post.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike’s story revolves around the relationships of three middle-aged single siblings, two of whom live together, taking place during a visit by the third, Masha, who supports them. They discuss their lives and loves, argue, and Masha threatens to sell the house. Add in sassy maid Cassandra, who can predict the future, and lovely young aspiring actress Nina, and you have a theatrical recipe for entertainment. Several nods to the works of Anton Chekhov are evident, including character names, the cherry orchard setting, and the theme of the possible loss of an ancestral home.
