Clean-up Day at Plimoth Plantation

Be a part of a South Shore tradition, as Plimoth Plantation announces its “18th Annual Museum Clean-Up Day,” scheduled for March 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Close to 200 volunteers of all ages turned out in 2010 for a satisfying day of service to the community. The Museum hopes 2011 will bring return volunteers and new friends, looking to give their time to a great cause that’s an integral part of the community.

“The days are getting longer, as spring and Plimoth Plantation’s greatly anticipated 64th Season Opening Day are just a little over a month away,” said Richard Pickering, Plimoth Plantation’s Deputy Director. “The Museum’s Clean-Up Day is an annual tradition and a way for the staff to work closely with the dedicated volunteers, who support Plimoth Plantation by spending a rewarding day pitching-in to make our Museum shine.”

For more than 18 years, Plimoth Plantation has been welcoming community members of all ages to join Museum staff for a family-
friendly, fun-filled day of hands-on activities as we wash, paint, rake, sweep houses, prepare gardens, move and clean furniture and do any number of spring-cleaning duties to prepare for Opening Day, Saturday, March 19.

Spring-Clean Day registration, begins at 9 a.m. on March 5, at the Henry Hornblower II Visitor’s Center. There, volunteers will be divided into teams and assigned jobs; by 9:30 a.m., volunteers will head out to the various sites, including indoor exhibit spaces, the Wampanoag Homesite, the17th Century English Village and Mayflower II.

Mid-day, the Museum will provide a hearty lunch, so “helpers” will be energized for any end of day activities. As a thank you, each volunteer will receive one complimentary admission pass to return to Plimoth Plantation and Mayflower II during the 2011 season.

Weather in New England is never predictable, so “Museum Clean-Up Day” will take place rain or shine. Organizers suggest all volunteers prepare for the elements by dressing in layers.

However, in the event of extreme inclement weather, a snow-date is scheduled for Sunday, March 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We are so grateful for the tireless commitment and dedicated
service Plimoth Plantation volunteers provide to the Museum year
after year,“ said Executive Director, Ellie Donovan. “As the hearth
of our community and a cultural resource, Plimoth Plantation is
a destination for visitors far and wide. Without the help of our
volunteers, Plimoth Plantation would not be the museum we are
today.

Volunteers are asked to pre-register by Feb. 28, by contacting

Plimoth Plantation opens for the 64th season on Saturday March 19, with a Farm Fresh Breakfast Buffet, followed by the Museum’s
annual Rare Breeds Animal Parade at 10:30 a.m. and a live wolf
program at 2 p.m. Visit www.plimoth.org for more information.
