Framed by Patch: The Engagement Tree
What better way to celebrate spring than with the grand old linden tree on the waterfront?
A long time ago a young couple planted a linden tree sapling to celebrate their engagement. A few days later, the engagement was broken when the gentleman was caught with another girl. In her anger, the lady ripped the young tree from the earth and threw it into the gutter.
An elderly gentleman saw the lady's anguished act and taking the young tree, he planted it in his front lawn, overlooking the water. The sapling survived and flourished.
Two hundred and two years later, the Engagement Tree still stands at the crest of Cole's Hill overlooking Plymouth's Waterfront. It is grand in its ruin, but every spring it still sends out buds.
