July Events at Scusset Beach State Reservation

All programs at Scusset Beach are free and open to the public.

There is a $7 parking fee for most programs.  Bring water, wear sunscreen/bug spray, dress in layers, and wear good footwear.  An adult must accompany children.  Rain cancels. For more information call (508) 888-0859.  Scusset Beach State Reservation is located at the end of Scusset Beach Road in Sandwich.

Beach Exploration: Beach Geology Tuesday, July 3, 3 - 4 p.m.

You’ll enjoy this opportunity to explore Scusset Beach with the Park Interpreter.  This week we will focus on beach geology, so join us for some fun at the beach! Meet at the end of the Scusset Beach boardwalk.

Investigating the Past Through Plants & Soil Wednesday, July 4, 10 - 11:30AM

Clues to the past can be seen by learning to read the landscape. Find out how plants and soil provide a historical record of previous events both natural and man-made.  Meet at the Scusset Beach Fish Pier.

Sagamore Hill Hike Thursday, July 5, 10 – 11:30AM

Explore the rich cultural and natural history of this area on this moderate walk to the summit of Sagamore Hill, culminating in a breathtaking view of Cape Cod Bay. The hill overlooking Scusset Marsh has a rich history from Indian Council ground to golf course to a World War II gun battery. Meet the Ranger at the entrance to the trail directly across from the Fish Pier Parking Lot. Parking fee is waived; let gate attendant know you are attending the Sagamore Hill Hike.   

Creature Feature: Lobsters Thursday, July 5, 3- 4PM

Learn about the lobsters and other creatures that live right here at Scusset Beach.  View some live animals and other natural history artifacts. Meet at end of Scusset Beach boardwalk.  Rain or heavy winds cancel.

A Modern Marvel: The Cape Cod Canal Friday, July 6, 3 -3:45PM

Join the Interpreter for a walk along Cape Cod Canal.  Along the way we will talk about the different uses of this land and the Cape Cod Canal, from Native American use of the land through today’s use of the Cape Cod Canal.  Meet at the Fish Pier.                     

Beachcomber Scavenger Hunt  Saturday, July 7, 3 - 4PM

Search for common seashore objects and discover the lore and history behind their found items. Meet at the end of the Scusset Beach Boardwalk. 

Beach Twilight Hike Saturday, July 7, 8 – 9PM

Have you ever explored the beach at night?  What happens when the sun goes down and the stars come out?  Find out on this great hike along Scusset Beach in the dark.  Flashlights are not allowed! Meet at the end of the Scusset Beach boardwalk.  There is no parking fee for this program.

Wildlife Walk Wednesday, July 11, 10 – 11:30AM

Search for park wildlife.  Learn how to use a plankton net and binoculars.  Find out where to look for birds, insects, and signs of wildlife.   Meet at the Fish Pier.

Around the Campfire with Smokey Bear! Saturday, July 14, 7 – 8:30PM

Gather around the campfire to share stories, play classic campfire games, roast marshmallows, or sing a song.  there will be a special guest at our Campfire.  Come visit with Smokey Bear and learn about fire safety!  Bring your camera and get a great picture of the kids with Smokey Bear! Come to the group campfire circle in the campground. There is no parking fee for this program.

Irish Music Session & Campfire  Monday, July 16, 7 - 9PM

Share a campfire with your fellow campers while enjoying some live Irish music!  Meet at campfire circle in the Campground. There is no parking fee for this program. Rain date is Monday, July 23rd.

Fire Safety Program at the Nature Center Wednesday, July 25, 1 – 2:30PM

DCR Forest Fire Control will be at the Nature Center on July 25 from 1 to 2:30PM.  Check out some cool forest fighting equipment and learn all about fire safety! Meet at the Nature Center in the Campground.
