Carbon monoxide detectors became mandatory in all new homes in 2006 after a the Garafalo family of Manomet lost their 7-year-old daughter Nicole. One winter night in 2005 the heating vent of her familiy's home was blocked by snow, allowing carbon monoxide to accumulate in the home. The entire family was overcome with the tasteless and odorless gas, before managing to call 911.
