Plymouth, MA to Host International Indigenous Artists
Cultural Survival celebrates 35 years of building bridges among Indigenous Peoples and the Greater Boston area public

Plymouth, MA (May 2017) - International non-profit organization Cultural Survival, known locally and worldwide for its work to promote Indigenous Peoples’ rights, will hold its annual Indigenous arts Bazaar in Plymouth for the second year on Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24 from 11am-6pm at DCR Pilgrim Memorial State Park.
This free-admission festival features all-day live music, along with art from dozens of cultures, including paintings from Guatemala; jewelry from Uganda and North America; textiles from China, Laos, and Burkina Faso; bags from Colombia; glasswork from the West Bank; and more.

The Plymouth community and its visitors are invited to share in this celebration of the world’s cultures and meet artists who travel from afar to share their crafts and stories. Indigenous makers demonstrate how to make their crafts and sell one-of-a-kind pieces of art for various budgets. One attendee called the Bazaar "the best place to get unique global gifts while supporting Indigenous cultures!"

Plymouth is known for its unique history as the place where the Pilgrims arrived. The Bazaar offers a chance to deepen visitors’ experience with a perspective on the Indigenous communities that thrived in Plymouth before the Pilgrims’ arrival and that continue to exist today, as they strive for recognition of their rights and cultures.

Since 1982, the Cultural Survival Bazaars have provided a market for thousands of artists and cooperatives spanning six continents and over sixty countries. Each year the Bazaars generate about half a million dollars for Indigenous artists, performers, and projects benefiting Indigenous communities worldwide. Attendees can enjoy craft-making demonstrations, free concerts, and one-on-one conversations with representatives of dozens of Indigenous cultures.

Several vendors represent cooperatives that make it possible for children to attend school and provide a source of income to women. Whether working with ancient techniques or modern materials, the artists produce unique pieces and intricate designs that fascinate viewers. One attendee said, "It's like a trip around the world's bazaars."
