Plymouth Man Charged in Hingham Drunken Driving Crash Has Long History of Erratic Driving

The Plymouth man who allegedly caused a drunk driving accident in Hingham two weeks ago, has received 16 speeding tickets and has had his license revoked or suspended 23 times since 1987.

The Plymouth man allegedly responsible for a drunk driving that put two people in the hospital, has a long history of driving violations.

According  Registry of Motor Vehicles records William E. Vonberg IV, 41,of 1 Anchor Drive, Plymouth has received 16 speeding tickets, his license revoked or suspended 23 times, and has been at fault in five car accidents before crossing the centerlines on Route 228 on Dec. 4 and smashing his pickup truck into an oncoming vehicle. His record contains everything from speeding tickets to traffic violations.

The list of his driving violations is so long Hingham Police Sgt. Steven Dearth said he has never seen anything like.

Since 1987, Vonberg, was convicted twice of driving to endanger, according to records. Records also show he had never been convicted of drunken driving before, but in 1991 he was cited for driving with an open container in Plymouth.

While some drivers go years without ever receiving a driving citation, records show that Vonberg had received a citation or violation every year from since 2001 and every year from 1987-1994.

, putting 59-year-old Karen B. Fontana of Hingham, and the passenger, 60-year-old Dorothy J. Doyle of Brockton, in the hospital. Both victims were wearing seat belts.

Vonberg was also rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

said Vonberg was drunk at Open containers of alcohol were found in the front seat of his truck.

Police said there was no indication that the pick-up truck stopped before crossing the centerlines. Air bags were deployed in both vehicles at the time of crash.

Vonberg will be charged with operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious injury, two counts of negligent operation, operationg a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, operating to endanger, operating with an open container of alcohol, and a marked lane violation. A request to the Registry of Motor Vehicles is being submitted to have his license suspended.
