NEW BEDFORD — The MV Thorco Svendborg, the first customer to for the $113 million Marine Commerce Terminal, arrived in New Bedford Harbor on Monday as city leaders, politicians and representatives of several local unions gathered at the Gifford Street boat launch to mark the occasion.
The 409-foot-long, Hong Kong-based cargo freighter is delivering turbine components for a land-based wind farm in Plymouth. Speakers said Monday that the ship’s arrival could represent not only the dawn of a new industry in New Bedford — although the viability of offshore wind has its doubters — but also the start of a new season for workers on the waterfront.
“This is the first summer ship we’ve had in 25 years,” said deputy port director Ed Anthes-Washburn, referring to the deviation from the normal winter-based shipping season.
“To see this happen is kind of shocking,” Ed Lacombe, president of the local International Longshoremen’s Association chapter, said of the ship’s arrival. “It’ll bring us year-round work.”
Local company Maritime International will oversee the ship’s offloading at the terminal. Maritime International offloads all international cargo that comes into the Port of New Bedford.
The components were made by Gamesa, a Spain-based company that produces, maintains and operates wind turbine facilities around the world.
The terminal is managed by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (CEC), which has been seeking an operator for the 28-acre facility. Mass CEC spokeswoman Catherine Williams said in March that Mass CEC had received three proposals from potential operators, but the center declined to name the bidders.
David Wechsler, president of Maritime International, said Monday that components from the Thorco Svendborg will be trucked through the city and to the Plymouth area next week.
“There’s another ship with more components coming” in weeks ahead, Wechsler added.
