The Speech & Debate Meet begins at 8:00 and runs through approximately 4:00 p.m.
The purpose of the MSDL All-Novice Speech Meet is to give new speech competitors a chance to compete in a less intimidating, educational environment prior to the start of the regular MSDL season. All students who are classified as novices under MSDL rules are invited to participate. Students with two or more years of experience in high school forensics are invited to judge.
The Massachusetts Speech & Debate League directs high school competitive speech and debate events. In addition to the competition, the MSDL will offer a morning training session for new and returning judges, providing them with what they need to know about judging a round, event rules, criteria for judging, and writing constructive ballots.
“It is an honor to be hosting the MSDL All-Novice Speech and Debate Meet,” said Daniel Sapir, Speech and Debate Coach for Sacred Heart School, who added, “Being selected as the host site for what will be a highly attended event with upwards of 500 coaches, judges, competitors and spectators is particularly gratifying as it comes on the heels of wonderful achievements of our Speech and Debate program.”
Coach Sapir’s sentiments were echoed by Sacred Heart School President Pamela Desmarais, who said, “We are very proud of our Speech and Debate team and all they have accomplished. Our students have traveled and successfully competed nationally, and we are delighted to host them at our home for this important event.”
She added, “We encourage people to come to see this speech and debate event and get a better feel for one of the many wonderful things our school offers.”
In September, Sacred Heart senior Adam Tomasi topped 55 national debaters from across the United States, taking first place in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Earlier this year, Sacred Heart Speech and Debate Coach Daniel Sapir earned national recognition as a “Second Diamond Coach” from the National Speech & Debate Association; as such he was officially honored at a national tournament in Kansas City, KS. The Sacred Heart School Speech and Debate Program is nationally recognized, offering instruction to students beginning as early as 6th grade.
