There is No Shortage of Irish Ancestry in Plymouth

White Island Shores has the highest percent of Irish ancestry in the state.

Over the years, St. Patrick’s Day has become more than a day of appreciation for St. Patrick. The holiday has turned into a day to celebrate all things Irish.

The Commonwealth will have no problem getting into the Irish spirit, as the state has the highest percentage of residents with Irish ancestry in the nation. About 21.3 percent of residents claimed Irish ancestry, according to census data.

If Massachusetts has the highest percentage of people with Irish ancestry in the country, does that mean the Plymouth area is the country’s Irish capital?

While that title is up for debate, areas in Plymouth were found to have some of the highest irish populations in the state.

White Island Shores was found to be the most Irish town in the state by WCVB, with 41.9 percent of its population claiming Irish ancestry.

Pine Hills was ranked number 20 with a 29.01 percent Irish population. North Plymouth was ranked number 36 with a 26.14 percent Irish population, according to WCVB’s rankings.

*Each of these locations in Plymouth are considered a Census Designated Place and have their own separate census data.

Tuesday, March 17 isn’t the only day to appreciate Irish heritage. The entire month of March was named Irish-American Heritage Month by Congress in 1991.
