Civil War Encampment on the Training Green

The 22nd Massachusetts reenactors will drill and camp on the Training Green Saturday to support the restoration of the 140-year-old Civil War Monument.

It's been nearly 100 years since the Training Green was actually used as one.

During World War I, local soldiers drilled there below the monument to the Union soldiers and sailors who died 50 years prior, during the Civil War.

Since that time, however, there has been more green than training.

Saturday, the day after Veterans Day, the green will once again feature training, of a sort.

The 22nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, a Civil War reenactment group, will play out what it was like to drill and camp on the Training Green 150 years ago. The event is being held to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War and the 300th anniversary of the establishment of the .

The event will also kick off the Plymouth Board of Selectmen’s efforts to begin restoration work at the Civil War Monument that was dedicated in 1869 on the Training Green.Β 

The reenactment will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Saturday. The 22nd will be in Plymouth again Nov. 19 to march in the town's annual Thanksgiving parade.

Schedule of Activities:

10 a.m. - Encampment opens to the public. Company roll call and inspection.

10:30 a.m. - Company drill, including firing demonstrations

11 a.m. - Kids muster. Using stick β€œmuskets,” any willing youngsters will be instructed in a bit of basic drill and how to form a company.Β  A few volunteers will be sought to try on some reproduction coats and gear to get a sense of what it was like to wear a Civil War uniform.

11:45 a.m. Civil War β€œFashion Show.” Soldiers and civilians will discuss their uniforms, gear and attire.

12:30 p.m. - United States Sanitary Commission. Our female auxiliary members will speak about the important work of women in the Sanitary Commission.

1 p.m. - Company drill, including firing demonstrations

1:30 p.m. - Kids muster

2 p.m. - Civil War β€œFashion Show”

2:30 p.m. - Company drill, including firing demonstrations

3:30 p.m. -Β  Closing Ceremony. Board of Selectmen. Brief remarks on Plymouth soldiers in the Civil War, salute to the Monument and the men of Plymouth listed thereon.
