What Should You Do with All of That Snow? Eat It, Of Course!

The best thing to do with so much pristine snow in your backyard: make snow ice cream. Here's five tasty recipes for the frozen treat.

For many who grew up in snowy states, a big bowl of snow ice cream can bring you right back to childhood. And luckily for all the nostalgic people in Massachusetts, winter storm Juno - as the Weather Channel has dubbed the state’s latest blizzard - just dumped feet of prime ice cream-making snow in your back yard.

Those of you who grew up on the stuff, and may have already made it with your own kids in past winters, won’t need a snow ice cream tutorial. So I won’t tell you how to make it, except for this one super important tip: use clean snow. Trust me, you don’t want the yellow stuff - it’s not lemon flavored.

But most of you probably haven’t experimented with different kinds of snow ice cream. You may have only had vanilla, which is still absolutely delicious, but if you’re looking to add a little extra flavor to your snow there are easy ways to do so.

Here’s a few recipes for your not-so-average snow ice cream:

Cake Batter Snow Ice Cream: Have your cake and ice cream wrapped into one easy-to-make dessert. This blogger uses yellow cake mix for her recipe, but says you can substitute any flavor of cake you like best (funfetti anyone?). The recipe also calls for 3 tablespoons of whipped cream vodka, but you can easily replace that ingredient for milk or cream if the kiddos will be eating this as well.

Vegan Vanilla Snow Ice Cream:

Everyone deserves a snowy treat after being cooped inside during the blizzard, even people who don’t, or can’t, eat dairy. This recipe for dairy-free vanilla snow ice cream is perfect for vegans and those who are lactose-intolerant. Simply replace the milk used in typical snow ice cream recipes with almond, soy or coconut milk.

Chocolate Snow Ice Cream:

As much as I loved my mom’s vanilla snow ice cream growing up, I would definitely have chosen this chocolate version instead. Chocolate is always better. Just add a little (or a lot, we won’t judge) cocoa powder to the mix and you’re on your way to chocolatey bliss.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Snow Ice Cream:

If you thought the chocolate version was good, wait until you try this recipe. Adding just a tad bit of peanut butter, you don’t want to overpower the chocolate, turns your treat into a frozen peanut butter cup.

Maple Snow Ice Cream:

Anyone who grew up with real maple syrup knows, maple and cream just go together. The combination shines in this recipe, with just a couple of tablespoons of pure maple syrup. Note: you’ll definitely want the real stuff for maximum flavor.

Amaretto Caramel Snow Ice Cream:

For super fancy snow ice cream, crush up a few amaretto cookies and make a caramel sauce. This recipe combines melted white chocolate chips with a pre-made caramel sauce. Chop up a handful of almonds to serve on top for a pretty presentation.
