Funny and touching, this winner of the 1978 Pulitzer Prize from Drama uses a card game as a metaphor for life. Weller Martin is playing solitaire on the porch of a seedy nursing home. Enter Fonsia Dorsey, a prim, self righteous lady. They discover they both dislike the home and enjoy gin rummy, so they begin to play and to reveal intimate details of their lives and their secrets become weapons used against one another.
“A thoroughly entertaining lesson in the fine art of theatrical finesse. The closest thing the theatre offers to a duel at 10 paces.” - The New York Times
White Heron Theatre presents “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike”
August 22, 24, 25, 26, 31, 2015 September 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 2015 • 7:30-9:30
VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE is a masterful, utterly hilarious comedy about grown siblings and the complications of managing their recently deceased parents and the family’s country estate in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. A mash-up of Chekov’s comedies, the result is an absolutely hysterical look at grown sibling relationships. Winner of the 2013 Tony award for best play. Written by master of comedy Christopher Durang and directed on Nantucket this summer for White Heron Theatre by Tony winner Martin Platt. Vanya and his stepsister Sonia have lived their entire lives in their family’s farmhouse. While they stayed home to take care of their ailing parents, their sister Masha has been gallivanting around the world as a successful actress and movie star, leaving Vanya and Sonia to feel trapped and regretful. Their soothsayer/cleaning woman Cassandra keeps warning them about terrible things in the future, including a sudden visit from Masha and her twenty-something boy toy Spike.
“Deliriously Funny” says the New York Times. “Brainy and witty and clever!” says Variety.
