Open Statements In Bella Bond Trial Scheduled For Tuesday

Opening statements in the trial of the man accused of killing the 2-year-old girl known to many as Baby Doe are expected to take place Tuesday.

Michael Patrick McCarthy, 36, faces a charge of first-degree murder in the death of his former girlfriend’s daughter, Bella Bond.

Bella Bond's mother, Rachelle Bond, pleaded guilty in February to helping dispose of her daughter's body after her then-boyfriend allegedly killed the 2-year-old girl. She is scheduled to be sentenced after McCarthy's trial.

A woman walking her dog along the beach found Bella’s remains in a trash bag on Deer Island Beach on June 25, 2015. Some 60 million people across the world viewed a computer-generated image of the child. It was placed on 84 billboards across the state of Massachusetts.

Bond told police that she saw McCarty killed her child after striking her in the abdomen in May or June of that year. The two were arrested in September after police received a tip.
