When the woman was swept by the waves, the man jumped in to try to save her.

JAMESTOWN, RI — A couple from Quincy died Sunday after a rough surf at Fort Wetherhill pulled them from the rocks while they were fishing, causing them to drown.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) identified the victims as Kongjuana Wei, 51 and Xianzan Tan, 52.

According to environmental police, Wei was pulled into the water and Tan jumped in to try to save her. A U.S. Coast Guard response crew pulled the two from the water, but they were pronounced dead at Newport Hospital.
