5) Roscoe P. Coltrane. On this day, in 1979, “The Dukes of Hazzard,” a television comedy about two cousins in the rural South and their tricked-out 1969 Dodge Charger, known as the General Lee, debuts on CBS. The show, which originally aired for seven seasons, centered around Bo and Luke Duke and their ongoing efforts to elude their enemies, the crooked county commissioner “Boss” Jefferson Davis Hogg and the bumbling sheriff, Roscoe P. Coltrane. Known for its car chases, the final episode of the show aired in 1985 and has since spawned a 2005 film adaptation.
