5) Golden arches. On this day, in 2007, Beijing, China, capital of the planet’s most populous nation, gets its first drive-through McDonald’s restaurant. The two-story fast-food eatery, located next to a gas station, had an elaborate opening ceremony featuring traditional Chinese lion dancers and a Chinese Ronald McDonald. In September, 2008, Chinadaily.com reported that China was the number one growth market for McDonald’s, other than the U.S. with 960 restaurants and 60,000 employees. Fast-food chains from foreign countries first came to China in 1987, with the opening of a Kentucky Fried Chicken.
