5. Houston, we have a problem: On this date in 1970, Apollo 13, which was supposed to be the third lunar landing mission, launched from Cape Canaveral, FL. After one of the ship’s command module oxygen tanks exploded April 13, the mission was scrapped and plans were developed to bring the three astronauts home safely. Astronauts James Lovell, Fred Haise and John Swigert were forced to utilize the ship’s moon landing module as a lifeboat for nearly 90 hours before re-entering the earth’s atmosphere, even though it was only designed for two men for 45 hours. On April 17, the stricken command module splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean.
