- The new Sultan of Swat: On this date in 1974, Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hit his 715th career home run, breaking Babe Ruth's record of 714 homers. A crowd of 53,775 people, the largest in the history of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, was on hand when Aaron hit a fourth-inning pitch off the Los Angeles Dodgers' Al Downing, according to History.com. By the time he retired in 1976, Aaron had amassed 755 home runs, a record that would not be touched until Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit his 755th in 2007.
