5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 22

Today is Tuesday, March 22. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. A bit more seasonable: So the first full day of spring was delayed by some snow and rain Monday. Today will be much different, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 45 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
  2. On the agenda: The Secondary School Building Committee meets today at the library at 6:30 p.m. Over at , the Pedestrian Sidewalk Committee meets at 6:30 p.m. in Room 10.
  3. Who wants to be a multimillionaire? Tonight’s Mega Millions jackpot stands at $244 million. Check out the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission website to find out where in North Reading you can purchase tickets. The drawing is tonight at 11:24 p.m. on WCVB-TV Channel 5.
  4. Make your Friday plans now: Tickets are still on sale for North Reading Parks and Recreation’s 10th annual at the on Friday from 7-10 p.m. Wines from around the world will be available for tasting, and there also will be a silent auction and raffles. Proceeds will benefit North Reading recreation facilities and programs and also will support improvements at , such as the construction of a new pavilion. Admission is $40 per person, and tickets are available at the Parks and Recreation office at Town Hall, by calling 978-664-6016, or by visiting the Parks and Recreation website.
  5. The Wine and Food Social was made possible by FDR: On this date in 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Beer and Wine Revenue Act, which helped usher in the end of Prohibition. According to History.com, the law levied a federal tax on all alcoholic beverages and gave individual states the option to further regulate the sale and distribution of beer and wine. The 18th Amendment, passed in 1919, outlawed the sale of alcohol in the United States. The Beer and Wine Revenue Act was followed in December 1933 by the passage of the 21st Amendment, which ended Prohibition.
