5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 25

Your daily digest of what's going on in North Reading.

Today is Friday, March 25. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. Just a few more days until April: According to the National Weather Service, there may be a slight chance of snow showers before 1 p.m., and then a slight chance of rain showers between 1-5 p.m. The high temperature will be near 39 degrees.
  2. Always use a designated driver: While you should never get behind the wheel intoxicated, you don’t want to take a chance today. The Massachusetts State Police will operate a sobriety checkpoint somewhere in Middlesex County today into Saturday. The checkpoint will be operated during varied hours, and the selection of vehicles will not be arbitrary, state police said.
  3. A horse is a horse, of course: One week later, and our photos from Saturday’s still sit atop our list of most popular stories. If you haven’t seen them yet, check them out.
  4. Wine and Food Social is tonight: Contact the North Reading Parks and Recreation office at 978-664-6016 to purchase tickets for tonight’s event, which is at the from 7-10. The event features top wines from around the world, food samplings from many local restaurants, beer tastings, raffles and a silent auction. Proceeds will benefit Parks and Recreation facilities, programs and park improvements.
  5. Paying for tea: On this date in 1774, British Parliament passed the Boston Port Act, closing the port of Boston and demanding that the city's residents pay for the nearly $1 million worth (in today's money) of tea dumped into Boston Harbor during the Boston Tea Party on Dec. 16, 1773, according to History.com.
