The town is advising residents as it prepares to move to an automatic trash and recycling collection system this summer.

READING, MA — The town is preparing to move to an automated trash and recycling collection system starting July 6.

One of the big changes will be how bulk waste is collected, like couches and appliances.

Beginning July 6, bulk items must now be scheduled in advance with Republic Services.

Residents must call 1-800-442-9006 to schedule pickup, the town said. Payment is required at the time of scheduling.

Bulk items will no longer be picked up automatically at the curb, and residents will no longer be allowed free disposal of bulk items alongside their weekly trash.
