📰 News we're reading

• Bulk Waste Collection Changes Announced For Reading (patch.com) — Reading residents will see major changes to bulk trash disposal when the town switches to automated trash and recycling collection on July 6. Couches, appliances, and other large items will no longer be taken automatically at the curb; instead, residents must schedule and prepay for pickup with Republic Services by phone.

• 📍 Zoning Board of Appeals 6-1-26 AI Recap (readingrecap.com) — Key zoning decisions in Reading this week cleared the way for new multifamily housing on Woburn Street and an attached garage on Forest Street, while continuing a hearing for John Carver Road. The Zoning Board of Appeals approved both variances unanimously, adding conditions on parking, landscaping, trash, and privacy fencing that will directly affect nearby neighbors and future development.

• Reading establishes permanent funding source for Unified Sports program (homenewshere.com) — Reading Town Meeting has voted by a wide margin to create permanent stabilization funds for the Unified Sports program and other adaptive or therapeutic activities, using up to half of Burbank Ice Arena’s excess rental revenues. Supporters say this secures a beloved inclusion program for students with disabilities, while some financial officials remain wary about relying on variable rink income during looming budget challenges.
