Reading Police Officers Lauded For Delivering Baby In Vehicle

READING, MA — Two Reading Police officers helped to safely deliver a baby boy early Monday morning, according to a police statement.

Dispatcher Brad Mickle received a 911 call at 3:48 a.m. from a man reporting that his wife was in labor in their vehicle.

Mickle told the man to pull over and kept him calm while he collected the necessary information and dispatched police and firefighters.

Officers Lorrin Taliaferro and Paul Peoples responded. They checked in with the mother, discovering that she was deep in labor and would need to deliver the baby in the vehicle.

Taliaferro and Peoples assisted with delivering a healthy baby boy. Taliaferro assessed and monitored the baby to ensure he remained crying and responsive while Peoples evaluated the mother.

Firefighters responded and took the mother and baby to Winchester Hospital. The mother and baby are both doing well.

“First, I would like to congratulate this family on their beautiful new addition,” Police Chief David Clark said in a statement. “I would also like to recognize Officers Taliaferro and Peoples and Dispatcher Brad Mickle for their composure in a fast-paced, stressful situation. Professionalism and attentiveness matter most in situations like these, and the response from these officers alleviated some of the stress from the parents in an overwhelming moment. We wish the family all the best, and we are pleased to hear that everyone is doing well.”
